Tony Ryan
In May 2001 Tony retired from the BBC where he held the position
of Head of Executive Development. In this role he developed
and extended the succession planning process to focus on the
development needs of senior managers in the BBC. Although he
used a wide variety of personal development activities, Tony
increasingly found that executive coaching was the most effective
in achieving change both for individuals and the organisation,
and this experience is described in the book.
Tony began his career in British Airways where he ran the Apprentice
Scheme. He moved to IBM where he held several senior management
positions in the HR function. As Head of Management Development
for both the UK and European companies, he designed and led
many training and development initiatives linked to change in
business strategy and culture. He has conducted leadership and
team development programmes in most European countries, the
USA, and in several countries in Africa and the Middle East.
In 1989, as Director of Executive Resources IBM Europe, Africa
Middle East he was responsible for succession planning and senior
management appointments, and it was in this role he began his
interest and practice in mentoring people in leadership positions.
He moved to BAA plc in 1993 as Director of Training and Management
Development and introduced executive coaching to members of
the 'top 100' as a key resource to support the transformation
being undertaken by the company.
