After graduation, Karen joined Shell International Petroleum Company Ltd. where she spent ten years in human resources and industrial relations working across the oil and chemical sectors.

In 1983, Karen traveled to Australia where she worked for eight years. As the group executive for human resources and strategic planning at Edward Lumley Ltd., she was instrumental in managing their transition to an international financial services group from a pure insurance company. Within JP Morgan, she led and advised on the transfer and integration of the European branch network within the markets business. As Human Resources Director at Foreign & Colonial, Karen worked extensively with Hypo-Vereinsbank main board directors on the creation of the asset management division for the merged bank. In 1998, Karen left F&C and was appointed as a Non Executive Director, a position she still holds.
